Off topic: Is it true that it's a Jewish thing for the mom to slap a girl's face when she gets her period for the first time?
What?????? This is the first I've ever heard of it.
I'm pretty sure it is a thing in some folklore version of Judaism.
I googled it and it seems to be a practice adopted from the surrounding non-Jewish culture. See http://ausis.gf.vu.lt/eka/customs/youth_ini.html. See also http://books.google.com/books?id=nWY2c_WDqT0C&pg=PA36&lpg=PA36&dq=%22menstrual+slap%22&source=bl&ots=J78_Lp0dBm&sig=I5n8Qvo5S5rxRB1axukVdmhHsas&hl=en&sa=X&ei=RIt8UsmECYeTtQbl94DoCw&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=%22menstrual%20slap%22&f=false, where it's said to be "alternatively held to be of Greek, Turkish, Jewish, Lithuanian, Slavic or Eastern European origin."
Interesting. So Os don't do this or even know about it??
By that I mean: my mother–who knows nothing about Judaism–told me this. And I read it in a teen novel once, mildly observant Jews in the 1960s or so.
