It’s been quiet on the blog.
For two reasons:
1. Life has been wonderfully crazy – with our recent Shabbaton, and with the upcoming weddings of my baby sister, and, two weeks later, my baby brother-in-law. (Don’t worry – they’re in their twenties now.)
2. I’ve been assessing where I am with the blog. My cyber-sister Skylar recently posted a State of the Union update on her blog, so I’ve decided to copycat.
For some time I’ve been feeling that I’ve accomplished what I set out to in this blog. I’ve covered many of the major aspects of Orthodox Judaism – leastwise, the ones I’m willing to blog about – in a way that I feel have opened the doors of communication in a respectful way. So ought I agonize to continually come up with new aspects of Orthodoxy that are different? Maybe there aren’t all that many, as it turns out. In the words of the iconic Oprah, as she interviewed a Hasidic family, “We’re more alike than different.”
So does that spell the end of the blog?
No.
I believe it’s just the beginning. Because with our differences safely out of the way, let’s talk!
Now that we’ve formed a safe community here at OOTOB, I’d like to move on to stage 2. In stage 2, I’ll be doing the following:
1. Seeking to publish the first half of this blog into a book.
2. Maintaining dialogue about all things Jewish, with your participation.
3. Responding to and discussing stuff that’s in the news or trending out there in the world, as it relates to Jews of various persuasions – like the Oprah story above, the Victoria’s Secret model story, and so much more.
4. Sharing my involved musings on life through the prism of my faith.
5. Posting on topics I hear about from you, my readers, and relating to your comments and thoughts.
That said, I’ll probably be posting less frequently – maybe once or twice a week. And I’ll be taking about a month’s break to celebrate the weddings in our family!
But I’ll be back – and I can’t wait. I’ve missed you guys.
Oooooo what is the Victoria's Secret story?
๐ Didn't want to link it because it contained a pretty immodest video, but here's a quote:
Model Kylie Bisutti, 21, has decided to leave Victoriaโs Secret because it clashes with her Christian beliefs.
โI just became so convicted of honoring the Lord and my body and wanting to be a role model for other women out there who look up to me,โ Bisutti said" – also "โI was doing my makeup in the mirror one day and she was watching me,โ Bisutti said. โShe looked at me and was like, โYou know, I think I want to stop eating so I can look like you.โโ" Also, she's newly married, and cites wishing to honor her husband. Fascinating.
Sorry, that last quote was to her 8-year-old cousin who said she wanted to stop eating so she could look like her.
!!!! whoa. interesting.
Sounds interesting, Ruchi. Looking forward. ๐
I'm looking forward to stage 2!
Good luck with all your happy events. I for one find the discussions of our differences to be very stimulating and thought-provoking, so I look forward to continuing those in the spirit the blog has enjoyed so far. Still a lot of questions and observations here, so please be back soon!
My experience is that people don't care if you post every day or every week, so long as you post something worth reading to them ๐ (Don't take my blog as example b/c I've never tried to make it into anything big) So space it out as you need to, you have good content and people will come by to read your back articles as they search google. You'll still get plenty of traffic. The book idea is good and it's super easy to make e-books now!
Turning the blog into a book is a great idea! Keep us updated. ๐
Thanks for the cyber-love, everyone!
Don't forget "Shabbos" trend! http://mobile.nytimes.com/article?a=887478&f=28&p=0
Mazel tov on all the simchas/joyous occasions coming up. If you need help publishing your book, I have a contact for you in Cleveland Heights. I believe Paula McLain can help you. She's a dear friend and I believe is still on NY Times Bestseller list. So looking forward to Stage 2 as I've thoroughly enjoyed Stage 1!

I love that you're publishing a book! I'm late to this party and haven't read through the whole blog yet. A book is a great idea.
The book sounds like a great idea, I would be interested!! I agree, people don't care if you don't post all the time, just don't stop altogether!
So I have to post here that I dreamt a long dream last night where I met and visited Ruchi and her family! First I came to their cute bungalow house in my childhood neighborhood, very fun with cute kids all around and so forth. (Oprah echoes??) Ruchi was as lovely in the dream as online! Ruchi's husband in the dream was very nice, had long hair and an earring (which are very different signifiers to me than they are to observant Jews, but even in the dream I was suprised by that!). Then it turned out we were in some large apartment complex with all kinds of people and many observant Jews, everyone dressed modestly, I noticed, and although there were non-Jewish people living in this complex there was a kosher section in the cafeteria (my unconscious gets some things right), and there were many hallways and entrances, I ran into all kinds of people who were interesting to talk to, and then afterwards I had trouble finding my car! Meanwhile I also became anxious because I realized I had stayed so long that I had missed my teaching and an appointment . . . I guess morning was coming and I was more aware of my obligations for today.
