Thank you for visiting with us at Etz Chaim in Balitimore! I enjoyed your talk so very much, and got some great "take aways" to use in my every day life. Isn't it funny how the simple ideas can be the most profound? Thank you again for sharing yourself with us!
My pleasure! It was so great to meet you all.
Summer travel note:
The other day I was reading a junky, small-town newspaper over breakfast in Europe (NOT Germany, btw), where the back page contained things like a poll for readers about new local parking rules, and also jokes sent in by readers, and I was stunned to read the following reader-contributed joke: "Every night before bed, little Moishy prays and says, 'Dear God, please make me win the lottery.' This goes on for many many years. One night, when Moishy is a very old man, God says to him, 'For goodness sake, Moishy, help me out here, can't you at least for once buy a ticket?'"
I asked around a little, just to be sure–"Moishy" is clearly a Jewish name in these parts, not a name given by locals to their kids. The name of the reader who sent in the joke is not obviously Jewish. My local interlocutor thought it wasn't mean-spirited toward Jews, but instead might be meant as part of a genre of "a Jewish joke", sort of joining in on a known genre instead of meaning to participate in malicious stereotyping.
Now I think it's sort of a funny joke in one way, but in a small town without many Jews, not so much. It reminded me of the discussion around Ruchi's posts about the Passover cleaning van. And of a famous Seinfeld episode–sorry for pop-culture reference–where a comedian has converted to Judaism and is gleeful that now he can finally tell Jewish jokes with impunity, because he himself IS Jewish.
That is all.
Omg! That is pretty jarring! Especially because my son's name (after my father) is Moishy! Spelled exactly like that! It reminds me of this:

My friends, who employ Polish cleaning help, received a warm thank you note with this photo on it of a Jew counting money…
It is interesting that I know that selfsame joke only with a Catholic praying to Saint Anthony. I guess it is just a joke with different variations and should not be taken too seriously…
hey ruchi! isn't this a rather long "short hiatus"??
