To be a Jew

is humbling, proud, exciting

privileged, advantaged, chosen

Our rich history nourishing, teaching, reaching, pleasing, enhancing

the universe

Our contributions to society acknowledged, recognized, appreciated, valued,

utilized and amplified in every sphere and sector

of humanity.

To be a Jew

is scary, fearful, intimidating

underprivileged, disadvantaged, selected for persecution and hate

Our blood-drenched history denied, diminished, erased, gaslit as victims of the universe

Our contributions to society underappreciated, misappropriated, stolen, pillaged, squashed in every era and in nearly every country

of humanity.

To be a Jew

is to live this contradiction every day.

To be a Jew

is to remember that we fight hate with pride

ignorance with education

antisemitism with tradition, observance, with fulfilling our destiny

as leaders

teachers

lamplighters

lighthouses

torchbearers

bucket-fillers

of the universe.

To be a Jew

is the greatest responsibility and the most honorable title

I shall ever hold

and for that

I shall ever be grateful.
